Twitter is a website, owned and operated by Twitter Inc., which offers a social networking andmicroblogging service, enabling its users to send and read messages called tweets. Tweets are text-based posts of up to 140 characters displayed on the user’s profile page. Tweets are publicly visible by default, however senders can restrict message delivery to their friends list. Users may subscribe to other users’ tweets—this is known as following and subscribers are known as followers.

Facebook is a social network service and website launched in February 2004 that is operated and privately owned by Facebook, Inc. As of July 2010 Facebook has more than 500 million active users, Users may create a personal profile, add other users as friends and exchange messages, including automatic notifications when they update their profile. Additionally, users may join common interest user groups, organized by workplace, school, or college, or other characteristics. The name of the service stems from the colloquial name for the book given to students at the start of the academic year by university administrations in the US with the intention of helping students to get to know each other better. Multiply is a social networking service with an emphasis on allowing users to share media – such as photos, videos and blog entries – with their “real-world” network. It is currently the biggest “social shop” in Southeast Asia with over 70,000 merchants and 20 million unique visitors (Sept 10, 2010).

Last.fm is a music website, founded in the United Kingdom in 2002. It has claimed over 40 million active users based in more than 200 countries. On 30 May 2007, CBS Interactive acquired Last.fm for £140m ($280mUSD).

Bebo is a social networking website launched in July 2005. It is currently owned by Criterion Capital Partners. The website’s name is an acronym for Blog Early, Blog Often. Users receive a personal profile page where they can post blogs, photographs, music, videos and questionnaires to which other users may answer. Additionally, users may add others as friends and send them messages, and update their personal profiles to notify friends about themselves. Bebo was founded by Michael Birch and his wife Xochi Birch in January 2005 at their home in San Francisco. It was acquired by AOL on March 13, 2008 for $850 million. In April 2010, AOL announced it was planning to sell or shut down Bebo, with the sale being completed on June 17, 2010 to Criterion Capital Partners for an undisclosed sum. It has been reported that the sale raised less than $10 million. As of 2 November 2010, LinkedIn had more than 80 million registered users, spanning more than 200 countries and territories worldwide. The site is available in English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish. Quantcast reports Linkedin has 21.4 million monthly unique U.S. visitors and 47.6 million globally.
